Dr. Betty Shabazz Delta Academy
The Dr. Betty Sabazz Delta Academy was created out of an urgent sense that bold action was needed to save our young females, ages 11-14, from the perils of academic failure, low self-esteem, and crippled futures. The Delta Academy provides an opportunity for local chapters to enrich and enhance the education that our young teens receive across the nation. Specifically, we augment their scholarship in math, science, and technology, their opportunities to provide service in the form of leadership through service learning defined as the cultivation and maintenance of relationships. A primary goal of the program is to prepare young girls for full participation as leaders in the 21st Century.
Participants of the Brooklyn Alumnae Chapter Delta Academy enjoy and benefit from various activities including but not limited to Coding; Resume Building; Cyber Safety; Self-Esteem Building; Public Speaking; Cultural Awareness; and more.
Our objectives for this program are as follows:
Provide African-American females, ages 11-14, with an opportunity to learn and share their experiences, their hopes, and their dreams for the future.
Offer Delta Academy students the opportunity to accomplish great things together in the areas of sisterhood, scholarship, and service.
Provide African-American role models (mentors) for the girls at this critical point in their lives, and offer exposure to non-traditional careers for African-American women.
Demonstrate the relevance of math, science, and technology to a participant’s future, stimulate interest in these subjects, and improve her self image as a learner of math, science, and technology, as well as other non-traditional career choices.
The Brooklyn Alumnae Chapter’s 2017–2018 Delta Academy will run from October through May. We will have at least one session per month. If you have a young lady between the ages of 11 and 14 who would like to apply for this rewarding program, please fill out our application, and email it to DeltaAcademy@BrooklynAlumnaeDST.org.
